Grown up Amir

The first eight chapters of the novel The Kite Runner are pretty much talking about Amir's past and his life in Afghanistan. We see the story through his eyes, therefore we see his opinion on the different things that are going on in the novel, such as different characters that are introduced, different events, or what he is thinking. But in chapters 9-17 the story does a complete 180 spin and turns from a novel about the rise and falls of the relationship of 2 similar yet different boys, to a dark novel filled with drama and violence.
In chapters 9-17 we see that Amir wants to get rid of Hassan as a method to get rid of the memories of Hassan getting raped and his guilt for not helping him. We also see how the Afghanistan monarchy falls in the hands of the Soviets, and how the Talibans take over Afghanistan and transform it from a cheerful yet corrupt state, into a very strict state.

We start off when Amir is opening his birthday presents that he has received from some people who are very close to him, which he is very thankful for, and others that are from people he doesn't even know. He is given a wristwatch from Baba and he uses the wristwatch to get rid of Hassan and the dark memories that Hassan has given Amir. Amir hides the wristwatch and tells Baba that he can't find it anywhere, and Baba blames Hassan for stealing it. Amir is surprised at what Hassan did, even though he didn't steal it, he said he had stolen it so Amir wouldn't get in any trouble. Later we see that even Baba isn't mad, but Hassan is forced to tell Ali about what happened to him with Assef and his friends, and Ali decides that it's time to leave the house. Baba is shocked yet devastated and Amir is in a complicated place. He feels that he should convince Ali and Hassan to stay, yet he wants them to go away with the tormenting memories that they have given him. After they left, Amir's life became blend. Baba was very sad, and Amir felt the same as before, guilty, things became so bad to the point that Afghanistan was invaded by the Soviets and it caused ruckus and destruction all over the city. Baba and Amir, along with most Afghans, were forced to leave Afghanistan. They saw how everything had changed around them, people were running the streets crying, everything around them was being blown up to pieces, and even Amir points out that he was unable to recognize one of Assef's friends due to his state of shock. ess and hope, but then he sees how horrible their life's had become. I think that at this point Amir might have taken guilt about the soviets destroying Afghanistan, he might feel that it was some sort of God's judgement upon him for his actions.

Amir and Baba are able to flee to United States, and even if they escaped what was going on in Afghanistan, their lives weren't that much better in the US. Yes, they escaped all of the war, but they moved to a place that is extremely different from what their used to in their everyday life. They left their friends and relatives behind, they have to speak fluently a new language and learn about their culture, and most importantly, they were rich and famous in Afghanistan, in the US they're nobodies. Baba is employed in a gas station and is having trouble adjusting to life in the US. For example, Baba tries to pay in a store with a check because in Afghanistan everyone trusts each other in payments, but it's not

the same in the US. But Amir has changed, for the better. Amir has become more self confident, he can now stand up for himself. He is about to finish high school and go to college and he tells his dad that he wants to become a writer. Baba tells him that it was useless becoming a writer, but Amir had made up his mind and was confident. Even though Baba didn't like that he wanted to become a writer, he was proud of his son, he even buys him a car, an old Ford Gran Torino, as a present for his graduation. Then we see that Baba is speaking to a man, who is later introduced as General Taheri, and we also are introduced to Soraya, Taheri's daughter. Amir looks into her eyes and instantly falls in love. He asks Baba all about her on their way home and Amir falls asleep thinking about her.

After that we learn that Baba is very ill, he has cancer, and that even if Amir loves Soraya, he isn't brave enough to talk to her, until General Taheri leaves. Amir talks to Soraya for weeks, but as he is telling Soraya one of his many stories, General Taheri walks in on them and kicks Amir out. We later focus more on Baba and his cancer. We learn that Baba doesn't want anyone to treat him or anyone else than Amir to know about it until one day he gives up and collapses. His cancer has spread to his brain and he was very ill. Amir tells Baba on his bedside that he wants to marry Soraya, Baba happily agrees and he asks General Taheri if his son could marry his daughter. General Taheri accepts and Soraya happily accepts as well. Because Baba is so sick, they want to do the wedding very quickly. Baba spends his savings on an banquet hall, an engagement ring, Amir's tuxedo, and everything else necessary for the wedding. That is the first day that Amir and Soraya say I love you to each other, but tragically Baba dies shortly after.

Amir was besides Baba most days taking care of him, but the person who helped Baba the most was Soraya, that's when we learn how kind and warmhearted Soraya is. After the wedding we learn that Soraya and Amir are unable to make a baby, even though they both say to each other that it's nothing big, it causes a problem in their marriage, a problem that Amir sees and hates.

In the start of the next chapter, Amir receives a call from Rahim Khan, Rahim Khan asks Amir if they can meet. Amir leaves to Pakistan and sits with Rahim. Amir tells Rahim how he's married to Soraya, about Baba, and about how he is becoming a writer. Rahim tells Amir that he never doubted that Amir would become a writer. Well, if we think about it Rahim was the first person who read Amir's work and he instantly criticized it positively. The conversation then turns to Rahim's point of view. He talks about how the taliban took over and how he got the scar in his eye. A man next to him cheered in a soccer game, a guard walked up to Rahim Khan and smash his face with the bottom of his rifle. Amir also sees that Rahim is coughing blood and Rahim tells him that he might not even live through the summer. Amir also learns that Rahim was the one who took care of Baba's house when Amir and Baba fled, but Rahim was lonely. Rahim went to look for Hassan because he was so lonely, much to Rahim's dismay. Rahim Khan went to Hazarajat and found Hassan's home, a small mud house with Hassan in the back yard. They made eye contact and finally reunited after so many years. Hassan takes Rahim inside and introduces him to his wife, a pregnant woman named Farzana, a Hazara. They both sit down and Hassan tells Rahim about how Ali was killed by a land mine. I think that it probably was because of Ali's bad leg, Rahim even thinks that it was finally the moment that his bad leg betrayed Ali. Rahim asks Hassan if he could come back with him to Baba's house to take care of it but Hassan declines, saying that he now feels that Hazarajat is his home and he doesn't want to leave it. Hassan then asks many questions about Amir and how he has been, but Rahim tells Hassan about Baba's death and

Hassan is devastated, but the next morning, Hassan tells Rahim that he wanted to go with Rahim to Baba's home, but soon after they move in back to Baba's home, something unexpected happens.

Hassan doesn't want to live in the large house, even though Rahim asked him many times, he refused and he says that he wants to live in the small servant's hut in Baba's property. Hassan cleans that house with his wife and helps Rahim support the house. A few months later, Farzana gave birth to a stillborn child, and they had to bury them in their yard. Can you imagine how that would fell like? Waiting so long for a baby to be born, but when it's finally born, it dies. No wonder they both are devastated, but unexpectedly Sanaubar, Hassan's mother, appears on the front gate of Baba's house and her face is filled with severed cuts. Hassan and Farzana bring her in the house and take care of her, making Hassan and her mother connect, even though when her mother confesses that she was really Hassan's mother, Hassan ran away to the tree that Amir would read him stories, a place that he feels comforted, a place where he feels safe, symbolizing Amir's and Hassan's friendship. Saunabar is also pregnant and soon after she delivers a baby boy, a boy that she wants to give to Hassan and Farzana as an apology for what she did to Hassan. Sanaubar loves the baby very much but she only lives until the baby is four. The child asks around for Sanaubar, which made Hassan and Farzana very sad, but the child forgot about it soon after. The son is named Sohrab after the character of one of Hassan's and Amir's favorite characters on one of the stories they read together.

After that the story shifts back to Amir, about what he thinks about what happened in Rahim's past and what has happened in Afghanistan. Amir asks Rahim if Hassan is still in Baba's home, but Rahim doesn't reply. Instead he hands Amir an envelope with a picture of Hassan and a letter for Amir. The letter was written from Hassan, and it talks about how the Kabul they used to know was gone. He gives an example, such as how a man who was partly deaf, so Farzana had to raise her voice, but she was hit because women can't raise their voice now. friendship, but even till this day Hassan still loves Amir. Then Rahim Khan starts talking again and says that after arriving in Pakistan, he received a call from a neighbor in Kabul. The Taliban had gone to Baba's house and found Hassan and his family their. They didn't believe that Hassan, a Hazara, could own a place that size. So because of racism and disbelief, they killed Hassan with a shot in the head and Farzana as well for trying to defend the love of his life. The taliban took over Baba's place, and Sohrab was taking to a orphanage, who was later adopted by an American couple. Later Rahim tells Amir that Baba was worried about Amir in his youth, about how he couldn't stand up for himself, and he tells Amir one more thing, that Ali was unable to have children and Hassan's real father wasn't Ali.

There are many themes through these chapters, such as Karma, Assef's friend, Kamal being raped by soviets, and then dying because he had hurt Hassan, also Racism, Hassan being killed because the Talibans didn't believe that a Hazara could live in such a mansion,  and discrimination, Fazara was hit because she raised her voice.

I've really liked how the story has turned out. Even if I said that I liked the first half, about their childhood a lot, I like this part even better. Their childhood was a bit slow paced and I felt that this was the part in the story where the plot really kicks off and hooks the reader. From a happy yet saddening story about the childhoods of 2 kids, to how the world around them has turned since they were ripped apart. I've loved this novel so far and I can hardly wait for what is going to come in the future.

About the Book:
The Kite Runner is the first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini which was published in 2003 by Riverside Books. The story tells about a Amir, a young Afghan boy who lives in Kabul who is a Pashtun, who has a very close "friend" named Hassan, a Hazara who is the son of Ali, Amir's father's servant.
In the first 8 chapters of the novel we learn about both boys, they're families, the setting and environment around them, and most importantly the relationship that Hassan and Amir have. Hassan thinks that Amir is his best friend and that they have an excellent friendship, but Amir doesn't think the same way.

Plot/Character/Development:

Amir is the first character we're introduced when we start the novel. He is the narrator of the novel. We learn that Amir is the son of a very wealthy man, therefore with that money he was able to receive education and therefore he became very intelligent. Amir also loves his dad, he loves spending time with him to the point that he even dreams about it, but he is very jealous when his father pays more attention to other people instead of him, especially Hassan. Amir's mother died when she gave birth to him and this has made Amir think that his father hates him for that and I personally think that Amir started writing and reading poetry to fill the hole in his heart that wasn't filled with the presence of his mother. Amir admires Baba but it seems that Baba doesn't feel the same way. As the story progresses we learn more about Amir's relationship with Hassan. They have been close since Amir was born, but their relationship is pretty strange. Since Hassan is Ali's son, who had the same relationship with Baba since they were also very close since a young age and as they were growing up Ali was the one who did all of the chores and who served Baba, Hassan does the same things for Amir to the point that Hassan has to stand up for Amir, causing Baba to focus a lot on Hassan much to Amir's dismay. You see, Baba is the complete opposite of Amir, in fact he said so himself, "If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he's my son." Page 23. Baba loves playing and watching soccer, when Amir prefers reading books and writing stories/poetry, Baba is very manly, even to the point of having a rumor of him beating up a bear, Amir is not very manly and he is very nice and gentle. If you think about it Amir is kind of a hypocrite. He is jealous of Baba wanting Hassan to be his son, but Amir wants Rahim Khan, Baba's friend, to be his father. Rahim Khan is very different to Baba, he pays much more attention to Amir than Baba does, and he is willing to read and criticize Amir's writing when Baba shooed Amir away. Rahim Khan reads Amirs work and congratulates him for writing such a wonderful story which makes Amir very happy. Since Amir was intelligent and Hassan was illiterate, Amir would read stories to Hassan under a tree, so he decided to show off to Hassan by reading the story he wrote and Rahim Khan said was great. Amir thought that he was going to surprise Hassan, but he ended up being more surprised himself. Hassan criticized the ending of Amir's story, which made Amir very angry. We're later introduced to Assef, a teenager who is tall and handsome Pashtun who is excellent in soccer and is able to get people to like him easily. In the outside he seems like a sweet boy who is basically perfect, but in the inside he is a complete bully who torments Amir and Hassan, but he hates Hassan deeply, not for anythin Hassan has done himself, but for being a Hazara. Ali was also bullied not only for being a Hazara, but for having certain deficiencies. Ali's parents died in a car accident and he was adopted by Baba's father. Ali was also affected by Poliomyelitis, a viral disease that affects the nerves and can cause permanent paralysis, which caused Ali's right leg to be useless. Because of his leg and being Hazara, Ali was tormented as a child, just like Hassan. During the course of the story, we learn that Hassan and Amir love kite-fighting, in fact they attend a tournament that Amir won, but Amir didn't really like winning. He didn't like winning because even if he was able to win such a prestigious tournament and earn the respect of his father and the relationship he has always wished for with his father, he feels that the relationship is just an illusion that is going away. He feels that he doesn't love Amir for himself, he loves that Amir won the tournament, he even brags about it to anyone around him when he has a chance.

Themes:
 Racism: There are two ethnic groups in the story: Pashtuns, the rich ethnic group which populates most of the country, and the Hazaras, the poor group which is a much lower class than the Pashtuns and they are usually servants of the higher class. Amir is respected for being a Pashtun and for his father being a wealthy man, in the other hand Ali and Hassan are often stepped upon and bullied by others, to the extent of Hassan being raped and Amir watching it unable to do anything. This caused Hassan and Ali to leave the house. Amir didn't really mind, in fact, he kind of wanted Hassan to leave, it was partially his fault for hiding a birthday present from Baba and getting Baba to think Hassan stole it, but Baba was extremely sad, it was the first time Amir saw his father cry. There is still discrimination going on in Afghanistan, for example:

War: While everyone was asleep, gunshots started appearing and it alarmed everyone in the house, which was Amir, Hassan, and Ali. It was the fall of the Afghanistan monarchy. This caused Ali, Amir, and Hassan to stay together and Baba come running towards them. Baba was worried about their safety, but glad they were all safe.

Jealousy: There is a lot of jealousy throughout the novel, but it is focused only in Amir. Amir is jealous of anyone who gets more attention from Baba than himself. He gets furious especially when Hassan gets Baba's attention, which is most of the time because Hassan is the ideal son for Baba.

My Personal Opinion:
I really like this story, in fact I was very surprised. The people in my class seem to dislike it, and others who've already read it say that this is the "boring part" of the book and what's going to come in the future is much better. I've already enjoyed this book a lot! From how we're introduced to the characters and each of them having their own personality that makes them unique, to how their relationships with each other change during the course of the novel. It's difficult to give a better opinion giving the fact that I've only read 8 chapters. I'm looking forward to what's going to come in the future and the surprises that this book is going to give me and the emotions I'll feel along the ride. I'd recommend this book to people of any age, but be sure that you're mature enough to enjoy an amazing novel.

To Kill A Mocking Bird w/ Chapter 8 WW Words

“Scout is it true?” I asked, “Did she really die?”

“Yes it’s true, she died not so long ago, Atticus is in the house to see it for himself. I mean it was imminent that she would die, because she was really old.” Scout replied.

“Should we ask him if he saw, you know Boo?” I asked.

“I think so… but I don’t want to ask him, you ask him.” Scout said.

“No way Scout!” I replied, “There’s no way I’m asking Atticus, he thinks that I already stopped with the whole Boo Radley mystery, please you ask him.”

“Fine… I’ll wait until he gets back home.” Scout replied.

            I follow Scout back to the house, where we both wait for Atticus.

We see Atticus walking towards the kitchen; he sits down and starts reading a newspaper. “Okay Scout, go on now.” I said. Scout starts walking towards Atticus and asked, “Atticus, did you see Mr. Arthur?” I notice Scout tried to say it without interrogating him, she was also lionizing Atticus with those precious eyes of her. Atticus placed the newspaper on the table, he turned his said to Scout and said, “I did not.” And went back to his newspaper. I didn’t know if Atticus was lying, or if it was true, but I don’t want to ask him anything about it.

            Next morning I woke up and saw small white dots falling from the sky. I didn’t know what it was; I thought it was bits of the sky falling down. I ran downstairs completely frightened and yelled. “Atticus! The world is ending! Please you have to do something!” I said as I dragged him towards the window.

            “No it isn’t, its just snow Jem.” Atticus said. “It’s actually very bizarre, snow in Maycomb County.”

            I have never seen snow, it was so amazing, I ran outside with Scout and just admired.

            “Jem, don’t try one! It tastes like contaminated water!” Scout told me.

            “Hey Scout, I have an idea, lets build a snowman.” I said, “We’ll make it huge.” Scout and I conspired the idea of the snowman, and when it’s done, we’ll show it to Atticus.

            Scout and I started gathering snow from other neighbor’s front porches. Time elapsed by while we ran around the neighborhood gathering, but we finished in time. Scout and I decided that we would build the snowman like Mr. Avery, so we started shaping the snowman as best as we could. “It looks pretty nice doesn’t it?” Scout asked.

            “Yeah, but if it’s Mr. Avery we need 1 last touch.” I replied, I grabbed a piece of stove wood and stuck it right between his legs. We both laughed and called Atticus, “Atticus! Come out here!” We both yelled. Atticus came out of the house and looked at the snowman. “Wow, this is really good. Guys im really proud of you.” Atticus said as he gave a closer inspection at the snowman. “Uhh children, you better disguise that thing between his legs.”

            Scout and I ran to Mrs. Maudie’s front porch and took a hat, and a small skirt, and placed it on the snowman.

            “Jem Finch, you could’ve asked if you could borrow that clothes… wait what is that?” Miss Maudie yelled as she ran over to the snowman. Jem put the clothes on the snowman, disguising it’s wee wee. Mrs. Maudie started walking back to her house and yelled, “Give me my snowman after you finish that hermaphrodite!” Mrs. Maudie said.

            Scout and I went back in the house because it was getting dark. The next morning we went downstairs and Atticus told us that the dining room in Miss Maudie’s house was on fire. We both ran infront of the Radley Place. This was a whole calamity, snow, and then fire? Scout and I stared at everything that was happening. We were very meticulous since we were in front of the Radley’s house.  I look down and see a man placing a blanket on Scout, who was sitting in the snow. I stared at the person who had the blanket but he just assimilated with everyone besides Miss Maudie’s house. Atticus came over to us and asked, “Scout where did you get that blanket?”

            “Oh, I really don’t know.” Scout replied as she stood up. “Should I say anything?” I thought,  “Maybe it was Boo Radley?”

            Scout walked away and I told Atticus, “Atticus! I think that Boo Radley placed the blanket! He sneaked up on Scout, and placed it slowly and walked away.”

            “Jem” Atticus said, “Do not let this inspire you to go further glory.”

I thought about what he said all day long.

The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow

         The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow is a tremulous legend, which takes place in Sleepy Hollow, New York. It is about a affable teacher called Ichabod Crane which moved from Connecticut to New York, he is admired for his intelligence, he’s a sage.

        One of Ichabod’s students is called Katrina Van-Tassel, an 18 year old girl which is the most charming, prettiest girl in town, but not exactly the smartest, but her father Baltus Van Tassel has the best farm in the area, so her family is really rich, and in one second Ichabod falls in love with her. Ichabod starts going to her house, and doing things with her so he can marry her, he also starts talking to her father.

         Another man who fell in love with Katrina’s charm, and richness is Brom Bones, who is an irascible man which loves to pull pranks on people, and he’s really good horse back riding. Brom has been a challenge to other people who fall in love with Katrina. Brom now try’s to impel Ichabod from seeing Katrina by pulling pranks on him and humliating him.

        Ichabod got invited to a party on Katrina Van-Tassel’s house in a stormy night. Brom tells Ichabod about a man called the Headless Horseman which haunts people at night and he cuts others people heads to see if he can place it on his head, but Ichabod was not scared. For some reason Katrina left Ichabod, and Ichabod left the party lonely and heart broken. Ichabod gets on his horse and he starts walking home in a silent, creepy, interminable seeming rode.

        Ichabod could see a black horse and a man with no head, Ichabod thought that this was amiss, how come he doesn’t have a head? Maybe because of the fog he couldn’t see the head, but then the man got closer, it had a pumpkin on his lap, it was a beast, it was the Headless Horseman.

       Ichabod try’s to run away from the Headless Horseman so he could get home but he failed. The Headless Horseman and Ichabod end up infront of a church racing towards a bridge in which the legend says that the Headless Horseman should disappear. Ichabod runs towards the bridge but he notices that the Headless Horseman was not disappearing, but he was getting weaker. The Headless Horseman grabs his pumpkin and throws it to Ichabod.

         The next day the people of the town see the crushed pumpkin, Ichabod’s hat, and horse steps on the ground but there was no sign of Ichabod. Many people thought he went to the forest and became a recluse, or back to Connecticut, but some people thought the Headless Horseman had taken him.

Rough Trip

Day 9, Location: Atlantic Ocean

Today I’m working with the sailors of the mayflower trying to find the New World. We haven’t found anything yet, and each day someone is dying either from diseases, dehydration, or hunger. It’s imperative that we find the New World because we need food and clean water to survive. I have to say that I’m nervous and scared about if I will ever die on the boat, I really want to reach the New World.

            Columbus is a great man, he’s a man of short words, he is grumpy and he only talks if it’s to yell at us, or to ask us if we have seen land. If we tell him no, we didn’t find any land, he will have an angry disposition and he will yell at you. I think that Columbus tricked us to go on this trip because he said we were going to be Kings and Queens, we would be rich and wealthy, but it’s been 9 days and we’re in the middle of the Atlantic. I don’t have any diseases, but I’m really thirsty and hungry, I want to reach the New World. Columbus’s guile was horrible, he tricked us to go on this trip, I have a little hope but I hope we rich the New World soon.

            Overall I think we’re doing okay, I hope that no one else dies and we find the new world soo n. I don’t think we can stay here any longer; people are having home sickness, diseases, and dying of hunger. We are struggling to survive, but I’m not sure if I’ll make it until tomorrow. I want to eat but we are almost out of food and I have to leave some for the other sailors. All of this was spontaneous, Columbus told us that we would reach the New World and we would all be okay, but we are dying, I think that Columbus is a foolish liar, but I still believe a little bit that the New World exist. Either if it exists or it doesn’t, I want to reach land as soon as possible.

Just an Eye

I’m taking care of a old man who has an evil, hunting blue eye that bothers me, since I work for him. I’ve gone to his room at midnight for the past 7 days to see if he evil hunting eye was open or if he was asleep.  Every night I open the door gingerly to see if he was awake. Today, the eighth day I step in the room again and I see that the old man had his eyes open and he was awake. “Who’s there?” the old man cried, and he said it once more with a grimace expression on his face. I stayed still without moving a single muscle. I was scared, I felt nervous, my mouth dehydrated and my throat started to itch. I check my inventory, its all there to help me kill the old man.

I couldn’t take it anymore, I ran to the old man grabbed the mattress in a cursory manner, and I clad him with his bed really hard against him, he made some screaming noises, but after a while he was dead. I went to a room, chamber under the old man’s house to hide the body somewhere around. I grabbed a lantern and I electrified it with some cables to see the room better because it was pitch black. Looking at the old man’s corpse made me feel gruesome.  I tear 3 planks from the floor and I place the old man carefully on the floor. There is no blood, or any proof that the old man is done, I did this very precisely, and police couldn’t corroborate that the old man was dead.

I climbed up the stairs and sat on the living room and then the doorbell rang. I opened the door and two cops showed up. I knew that the neighbors had called them. I take them to the chamber as I showed them all around the house and I give them two chairs so they can sit down and I pull up a chair for me in the exact same place as I hid the body. I told them the old man was out of the country and then they went to the other room to talk about what had happened. The police couldn’t surmise the murder because there was no evidence. I could swear I heard them simulating what I had said but in a childish manner. I endeavored to try to not feel guilty, but I couldn’t take it. I succumbed to my feeling and I blurted out to the cops everything that had happened. I derived great satisfaction after I told them. The spot in the floor where the old man had an abrasion so the police found the body easly and they took me to jail. My life was over; I’m going to rot in jail. But at least the old eye won’t bother any more.
